Retired U.S. Army Colonel Luther Harden Jackson peacefully passed away November 26, 2022, at the age of 98, surrounded by four of his six children, one son-in-law and one daughter-in-law, under the loving care of Treasure Coast Hospice at Cleveland Clinic Hospital North in Stuart, Florida. Luke was born July 18, 1924, in Roanoke, Virginia, to the late Harden R and Gertie Cook Jackson. After his high school graduation Luke worked at the War Department in Washington, D.C. before enlisting in the U.S. Army.

Luke married Evelyn Mae Carter February 5, 1949, in Washington, D.C. They raised their growing family of six children as they moved to a dozen military bases occupying three continents. They lived in over 16 different residences over the next 30 years. He said his favorite assignments were in Hawaii, Germany, and Fort Leavenworth.

Luke's military career spanned 33 years. Luke was a veteran of WWII, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He received many honors to include: the Army Commendation Medal, WWII Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Korea Presidential Unit Citation, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Legion of Merit Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit with Citation Palm ribbon and Commendation Ribbon with Metal Pendant.

Colonel Jackson was originally in the Army branch of the Infantry serving with the Big Red One 1st Infantry Division, 24th Infantry Division, and 25th Infantry Division before transferring to the Army branch of Artillery. Out of country assignments included Japan, Vietnam, two tours of Korea, and two tours of Germany. Luke attended George Washington University, University of Louisville, and graduated from St. Benedict's College in Kansas with a degree in Business Administration.

He retired from the U.S. Army at the end of October 1978, then settled in Stuart where he helped design and build their home in Snug Harbor. Five years later he designed and built a family vacation home in Breckinridge, Colorado. Luke and Evelyn split their years appreciating the Colorado mountains and returning to Florida in the winters. Luke opened a tax consulting business in Jensen Beach that he enjoyed operating from 1985 – 2015. He continued to take accounting courses and do his extended family members taxes until he was 96 years old. Being a "numbers" guy, he especially liked solving Sudoku puzzles in his later years.

Luke was predeceased by his loving wife of 54 years, Evelyn Carter Jackson, his sister, Shirley Jackson Breeden, and a son-in-law, John R Sturch, Sr. He is survived by his children and their families: Gail and Kevin Reid and their daughter Kate, Lois Jackson Sturch and children Erin Sturch, and John (Stephanie) Sturch, Jr., Paul and Diana Georger Jackson and their children Truman and Sterling Jackson, Lynn Jackson, Lael and George Burns and their children Jordan and Noah Burns, June and Mike Morton and their children Daniel, Michael, Mariah, and Madison, and a great-grandson Westyn Morton. Burial with full military honors will be at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in summer 2023.
