Bonita ("Bonnie") Jean Welch Waite, 86, died peacefully December 10, 2021, in Las Vegas, Nevada. She lived in North Las Vegas for 55 years. Bonnie was born April 3, 1935, in Huntington Park, California, to Jesse Evard Welch and Pearl Snow Welch. She was the eighth of nine children: Mary Welch Smith (1920-2005), Margorie Welch McGregor (1923-2007), Jay Welch (1925-2008), Gerald Welch (1928-1991), William Welch (1930-1999), Robert Welch (1932-2009), Theodore Welch and Catherine Welch.
Bonnie grew up in Huntington Park and the surrounding Los Angeles area. She graduated from John C. Fremont High in January 1953. Bonnie grew up in a musical family and excelled in music! She was invited to audition for the Mormon Choir of Southern California where she was accepted, singing 2nd Soprano. At the age of 17, Bonnie sang in the 1952 Easter Sunrise Service in the Hollywood Bowl. At 20, while singing with two of her sisters, Wendell Waite heard her sing and fell in love with her. Although unimpressed with him at first, Wendell quickly wooed her over and they were married in the St. George Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, sealed for all eternity, on July 2, 1955. Their love story on earth lasted 66 years;they were separated in life by only 25 days.
Bonnie's treasures were her family. Her family includes two living siblings (Ted and Kay) and her children Glenn (Linda), Marlon (Jill), Dan (Andrea) and Jana Dixon (David), 16 grandchildren and 55 (soon to be 56) of the cutest great-grandchildren on the planet. She adored them all!
Bonnie took a commercial stenographic study course early in her high school years that proved to benefit her throughout her life. In her early work experience, she used her clerical skills to gain employment in the civil service, working in the Los Angeles City Hall for $211 a month. Bonnie worked for the Clark County School District at Marion E Cahlan, North 5th Administration and in the Audiology department for over 30 years as a secretary and clerk.
Bonnie loved serving others by crocheting, baking, teaching, and listening; she was ever the cheerleader to teenagers who needed some encouragement. She and Wendell served as missionaries in the California Sacrament0 Mission for 18 months. She served for 9.5 years as the Stake Young Women's President in the Nevada North Las Vegas Stake, a calling she dearly loved. They served together teaching Sunday School at the Women's Correctional Center and then moved to Utah where they resided for 5 years. They returned to their desert home in August 2021, moving into the Nevada State Veterans Home in Boulder City.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, December 29, 2021, at 11:00 am, at the Church of Jesus Christ chapel at 100 E. Hammer Lane (Goldfield and Hammer), North Las Vegas. There will be a viewing at 10:00 am at the chapel. Interment will directly follow the funeral service at the Bunkers Eden Vale Memorial Park, 1216 Las Vegas Blvd. North Las Vegas.
