Born on March 28, 1941, in Eckhart Mines, he was the son of the late Elizabeth Kamauf Rephann Hansel and James Cobey Rephann.
He was a 1959 graduate of Beall High School.
Jim grew up in a farming and coal mining family.
One of his first jobs during high school was working for Edwin Eckhart, loading and unloading coal trucks.
Jim later worked for Potomac Edison, the Cumberland Fire Department, and retired from Allegany Ballistics Laboratory.
Jim was a member of Frostburg Volunteer Fire Department, Grantsville Volunteer Fire Department, and Frostburg Elks.
Jim is survived by his wife, Carolyn, of 47 years; daughter, Jennifer Dwyer and her husband, Bill, of Grantsville; two sons, Terry Rephann and wife, Dina, of Barboursville, Va., and Chris Moore and wife, Maria, of Cumberland; stepdaughter, Tracy Dyche, of Aurora, Col.; and two stepsons, Tim Dyche and wife, Anchaya, of Aurora, and Todd Dyche, of Grantsville.
He is also survived by four sisters, Kay Rephann Mendenhall, of Alexandria, Va., Connie Rephann MacDonald and brother-in-law, John, of Eckhart, Nellie Linda Rephann Bittner, of Frostburg, and Brenda Hansel O'Brien, of Dunn, N.C.; and one brother, David Hansel, of Frostburg.
He is survived by seven grandchildren, Logan Dwyer, of Grantsville, Sydney Dwyer, of Orlando, Fla., Alexandria Murdock and husband, Chris, of Salisbury, Pa., Ethan Dyche and fiancé, Meghan Hall, of Cumberland, Brittany Irish and husband, Thomas, of Rockville, Jacob Moore, of Cumberland, and Alexa Moore, of College Park.
He is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews, and three great-grandchildren (Fallon Lung, Jeremy Johnson Jr., and Oliver Irish) that may grow to four before this obituary is published.
Last, but not least, he is survived by his loyal watchdog and companion of a dozen years, a Pomeranian named Titan.
Jim was grateful for the friends and family in his life.
He was also fond of tinkering and building things.
He sometimes combined the two.
After "retirement", Jim, an electrician by trade, worked with contractor friends, Rodney Youmans and Richard Linn, on construction jobs in the region.
In later years, he enjoyed knocking a few down with his friends and spending quality time in the company of his devoted grandchildren, Sydney and Logan.
At Jim's request, his body will be donated to science.
Friends will be notified in the future regarding plans for a celebration of life for Jim at Grantsville Volunteer Fire Department.
