Alfred D. Clay was born on January 16, 1926. His father was Clifton Clay of Fort Bennings, Washington, D.C., and his mother was Julia Clay née Burgess of Arlington, Virginia. At the time of Alfred's death from pneumonia, he was not quite yet three months of age. Tragically, the Clay family had just buried their one-and-one-half year old son, Richard, three months before, and would have to bury another son, William, in November 1927.
