Don was born in Gambrills, Maryland, to Hugh Maclane "Mac" and Dorothy (Chaney) Proutt on March 15, 1943.
Don is survived by his wife, Linda Hiett-Proutt; daughters, Lisa Proutt and Lauren (Rob) Blundin; grandchildren, Grace Blundin and Jack Blundin; and sister, Sandra Moodispaw.
Don attended Arundel High School, where he lettered in baseball in the position of catcher, and played saxophone in the marching band. In 1961 he was awarded the Sol J. Friedman Unsung Hero Award by the Maryland House of Delegates for his dedication and performance in baseball. After graduating in 1961, Don attended American University in Washington, D.C., where he joined Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity and earned a bachelor's degree in business administration.
After college graduation, Don married Wanda O'Dell and moved to Tucson, Arizona, where both of his daughters were born. Although he was making a life and career in Arizona, he missed living close to his extended family, including his life-long friend and brother Ray Proutt. After moving back to Maryland, Don settled once again in Gambrills.
On July 10, 1986, Don married Linda Hiett-Proutt and moved to Severn. Together they enjoyed golfing and trips to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Chincoteague, Virginia, and cherished their pet cats. Don worked in banking and finance, including Valley National Bank, Farmers National Bank, John Hanson Savings and Loan, and T. Rowe Rice, and retired in December 2004.
In his spare time, he was an accomplished woodworker who made many cherished pieces of furniture, including a rocking chair and step stool for his grandchildren. Don was also an avid reader, particularly enjoying novels of suspense and nonfiction American history.
Don enjoyed coaching his daughter Lisa in basketball when she played for the local Gambrills-Odenton Recreation Council (GORC) basketball team, and he remained one of her biggest supporters at all of her sporting events. A fan of baseball, Don's favorite team was the Washington Nationals. He also loved a good comedy movie and was known for his wit and sometimes dark sense of humor. Don was loved deeply and will be missed by his family and friends.
