Elizabeth was born in late 1842 or early 1843, in Ohio. She was the seventh of nine children of William Kinmont and Nancy Pope. It's unclear exactly where she was born. It seems that her parents moved around Ohio several times in the 1830's and 1840's. At the time of the 1840 census, her parents and Elizabeth's six older siblings lived in Sandusky, Ohio. By 1850 they were living near Hicksville, Ohio, where her parents remained for the rest of their lives. In 1860, at age 17, she was still living with her parents and four of her siblings in Hicksville.

In 1865, she married William H. Hart. By 1870 they had two small children: Ervin, born in 1868 in Ohio, and Lottie, born in December, 1869, in Ohio. William, Elizabeth, and their children were living with Elizabeth's parents in Hicksville. By the 1880 census, William and Elizabeth Hart had moved to Saunders County, Nebraska. They have three more children. Glen, born in 1875; Clifton, born in 1877; and Iva Grace, born in 1878; all three of these children were born in Nebraska.

Elizabeth died September 25, 1881 at age 38, a few weeks after giving birth to a daughter, Batha. She is buried at Bender Cemetery, just north of Yutan, Nebraska.
