Shelley Lane Aakre
May 6, 1948 ~ December 16, 2022

Shelley L. Aakre, 74, of Vermillion, South Dakota, passed away on Friday, December 16, 2022 at Centerville Care and Rehab Center in Centerville, SD.

Shelley Lane Whitmer was born on May 6, 1948, the seventh of eight children, of Tom and Lena Whitmer of Bloomfield, Montana, at the hospital in Glendive, Montana. Shelley attended rural grade school and went to high school in Richey, Montana. She attended Montana State University at Bozeman, Montana where she earned her degree in history in 1970.

Shelley met her future husband, Elmer "Sandy" Aakre in 1966 and they were married on June 13, 1968 in Bozeman. Four sons were born to them – Aaron in 1970, Adrian in 1972, Adam in 1975 and Arlan in 1977. Shelley and Sandy lived in Bozeman in 1969 while he taught 7th & 8th grades at the Monforten rural elementary school while Shelley finished her degree. They moved to Outlook, Montana where Sandy taught in high school for two years before moving to Circle, Montana. Sandy taught in the Circle high school until 198. During this time in Circle, Shelley had a home child care center for several children along with her own.

Shelley and Sandy accepted Christ in their lives and they came to South Dakota where Sandy went to the Baptist Seminary in Sioux Falls. Shelley worked in the Odd Fellows Home in Dells Rapids, as an EMT, as the staff cook at Lewis & Clark Boy Scout Camp, as well as an assortment of jobs to help pay bills. After Sandy graduated from the seminary, they moved to Vermillion in 1984. Shelley was challenged to go to seminary and she earned her MDiv. And was ordained at First Baptist Church in Vermillion. Shelley became a chaplain at St. Luke's Hospital in Sioux City and served for 12 years. The hospital was forced to down-size 350 people and Shelley was one of those down-sized. She came home that 14th of December 2002 so sad because she loved what she did. Sandy told her to just get through Christmas and New Years before she decides to do anything.

On January 5, 2003, Sandy was called up to go with the National Guard to Iraq and the church asked Shelley to fill in for Sandy until he got back home. Well, Shelley served through three deployments, several other crises like Hurricane Katrina, the Spencer tornado and the Fargo flood relief effort that took Sandy as their chaplain. Needless to say, Shelley was kept busy in church with sermons, baptisms, funerals and visitations. Shelley retired in 2010 but kept busy in the church, with her family and Sandy.

Shelley is survived by her husband Sandy of 54 years, sons; Aaron (Anette) of Meckling, SD, Adrian of Vermillion, SD, and Arlan (April) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, her grandchildren; Joshua(Bobbi) of Wakonda, SD, Caitlyn (Madison) of Great Falls, Montana, Adam and Alba of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and great-grandchildren; Tracy, Lura, and Shauna.

She was preceded in death by her son, Adam, her parents, Tom and Lena , her siblings; Kay, Glenda, Randall, Gail and brother-in-laws; Larry and Jerry Aakre.
