"Chuck" as he was known as, was born and raised in the southend of Hartford, CT. With permission of his parents, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17 in 1944. He was a coxswain (driver of a troop landing boat) on the Troop Attack Transport, the USS Montrail serving in the Pacific. He landed troops in the Philippines, China, and Japan during WWII.
Chuck joined the Hartford Fire Department in 1948 as part of the largest graduating class of the new Hartford Firefighter Training Academy. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant and served until 1975.
He did various part time jobs while on the Fire Department and after he retired. He used his GI Bill in 1946 to go to automotive mechanics school. He loved working on cars and tinkering in general. He did electrical work, repaired and service oil burners, delivered oil, and was a bus driver.
He loved family gathering, Navy reunions, fishing, but mostly tinkering on the oddest project he could think of. He was a member of the VFW and the Fire & Police Association.
He was married to the love of his life, Constance "Connie" (Judge) Garry for almost 60 years at the time of his passing. They had five children: Bruce, William, Patricia, Ellen, and Charles Jr.
