Virgil Lawrence "Larry" Burgess, Sr., 78, passed away on Monday, December 5, 2022 at Mary Washington Hospital.

Larry was born in Logan, West Virginia on May 8, 1944 to the late Virgil and Hester Burgess. They moved to Kentucky when he was small and he was so proud of the Kentucky Wildcats even though he didn't attend college there. Larry joined the Navy Reserves when he was a junior at Raceland High School and upon graduation, went straight into the Navy. He wrote that "Fortunately, I must have paid "some" attention in school because my test scores were high enough to get me into an electronics field." He served for 12 years working and teaching Gun and Missile systems and was proud to be a Vietnam Veteran.

Larry worked for a while in Florida, doing carpentry work before moving to Framingham, Maine to work for Raytheon as a training manager for missile systems. He eventually moved to Maryland to work for another government contractor before his final move to Fredericksburg, Virginia. Larry continued working for government contractors and finally found his "home" when he went to work for SImVentions. He often remarked that was the best place to work and his co-workers were like family. He really enjoyed all those FredNats games he attended.

Larry was a people person and able to work with anybody. People have reached out to me with the highest praise for the person he was and how he was a unique, genuine person who they will miss.

Larry and I were married for 23 years and we were planning for many more years together. He was the love of my life and the center of our family. He embraced my three sons as his own and Christopher, James, and Thomas have been forever changed by his influence.

Those who knew him well knew that he considered myself and his grandchildren, Connor and Jade, to be his world. We of course knew that but for so many people to relay that to me has been a huge comfort.

Larry is survived by his wife, Deborah; brother Ronald Burgess of Worthington, KY; son Virgil Burgess, Jr. of Tidewater area; daughters Paula Rogers of Florida and Dawn Nieznajko of North Carolina; seven step-children; 20 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 15, 2022 at Quantico National Cemetery. For all wishing to attend, it is recommended that you arrive 15 to 30 minutes early to receive directions from the main gate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
