Walter Kenneth MacDonald was born on October 31, 1895 in Delta Township, Washington, to Bertha Eliza Catherine Setzer and John McDonald (not a typo). Or so records indicate. Family history tells another story. Bertha and John lived just over the Canadian border at that time, on a farm, and she wanted her children to be born in the United States. So when she went into labor with each of them, she was driven to her parents' farm in Delta Township, and had the baby there. With Walt, she was too far along in labor and ended up having him at home in Canada, although that was never revealed to the state.

Walt had 3 siblings, Christa, Raymond, Mayme and Jack. He was a sign painter by trade. He married Gladys Flaskett on March 7, 1917, in Tacoma Washington. In 1920, they moved to Bellingham, Washington, where he and Gladys had 2 children. Jerry Keith and Evelyn May. They lived in Bellingham till sometime in the 1930's, when they moved to Seattle. Gladys passed away in 1982, and Walt lived another 6 years. He died while living in the home of his son Jerry, on July 21, 1988.
