Merrill was born on March 30, 1942, the son of Mert and Hazel (Hoover) Beightol, in Webster City. He married Martha Shelton on July 2, 1966, in Webster City. Merrill served in the Marines during the Vietnam War, from June 1960 until June 1964.
Through the years he worked at Seneca Foundry, Electrolux, as a Machinist at Arrow Acme, and as a groundskeeper at Graceland Cemetery. Merrill enjoyed fishing and camping, spending time with his family, and watching old Westerns.
Merrill's family includes his wife; two children: Teresa (Shawn) Housley of Ankeny, Iowa, and Kevin Beightol of Webster City; two grandchildren, Ryan Doolittle and Alyssa (Noah) Altman; brother-in-law John (Barb) Shelton; sister-in-law Jane (Jim) Clark; three step grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Mike Beightol; parents-in-law, Merle and Arlene Shelton; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
