Henry Chapin Shew was the son of Dr Joel Shew and Marie Louise Barney Shew, but they divorced in 1850, and Marie remarried to Dr Roland S Houghton, who adopted young Henry and his 2 sisters and they were renamed Houghton by an act of the NYS Legislature.
His Obit: "Black Rock Man who superintended opening of Railroad, Henry Chapin Houghton, 73 Died at His home on Potomac Avenue [Buffalo, NY]. After an Active Career as a Railroad Builder and Operator in Canada and the United States. Henry Chapin Houghton, 73 years old, one of the pioneer railroad promoters of the United States, died in his home at 365 -Potomac Avenue on Wednesday. Mr. Houghton was an executive of the Erie Railroad which he had served for the last 20 years. He was born in New York City, the descendant of a long line of physicians, his grandfather being the house physician of 'Stonewall" Jackson, and his [adopted] father, Dr. Roland F. Houghton, attained fame tor medical research; " He graduated from Trinity prepratory school in New York and attended military college In Danbury, Conn., where he was the classmate, of the Iate E H. Harriman, railroad builder. Following his graduation, Mr Houghton took up railroading as a profession. During his life as a rail roadman he superintended the opening of the Yellowstone Park, the first railroad through the Rocky Mountains, and the construction of many roads in the pathless wastes of northern Canada. - He spent over 10 years pioneering and constructing Canadian roads, being an associate of Lord Thomas . Shaughnessy, the Canadian railroad magnate in many enterprises ... of the Wabash railroad at the opening of the Saint Louis exposition. He was a member of Alpha lodge, AF&AM, of Toronto. .He is survived by his wIdow, - Mary R, Houghton; one son. Francis R. Houghton of Los. Angeles; two daughters, Mrs. - A. D. Jordan of London, Ont, and Mrs. E. S. Keay of New York; two sisters, Mrs. Floyd Overton of Adams and Mrs. William Wiley cf Massapeqoa, Long Island".
