Ed W. Gill, 81, of Amarillo died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in First Baptist Church Chapel with Dr. Howard K. Batson, pastor, and Dr. W. Winfred Moore, pastor emeritus, officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Mr. Gill was born Sept. 20, 1926, in Amarillo to L.S. and Lillian Franks Gill. He graduated from Amarillo High School where he caught the winning touchdown pass in the 1944 state championship game against Wichita Falls. He boxed with the Golden Gloves and was a pitcher for the Amarillo Gold Sox.

Mr. Gill coached baseball for the Royal Ambassadors at the First Baptist Church. He loved golf and had at least three holes-in-one. He was an avid hunter and fisherman enjoying over 45 years of fishing adventures in Old Mexico with his son, grandsons and friends. Mr. Gill loved the outdoors and nature, including an incredibly cared-for rose garden. He loved taking care of his cattle and wildlife on his farm. He was an extremely caring person giving himself to others.

Mr. Gill was an agent with American General Life Insurance for 44 years and was a member of the Amarillo Underwriters Association.

He married Theresa Wink on April 28, 1951. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Mr. Gill was also a lifetime member of First Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Robert D. Murphy, in April 2005.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Theresa; a son, Mark Gill and wife Paige of Amarillo; a daughter, Cathi Murphy of Albuquerque; six grandchildren, Leighan, Brian, Casey, Travis, J'Hon and McKenna; and a great-granddaughter, Brooke.

The family suggests memorials be to BSA Hospice, P.O. Box 950, Amarillo, TX 79176-0001 or a favorite charity.
