N. E. ZACHARY, 84, retired Memphis Police Inspector and former Mayor of Houlka, MS and former Chief of Police of Wynne, AR, died at his home in Lancaster, TX on Sunday, February 11, 2007. He was born January 25, 1923 in Pontotoc County, MS, to the late James Ollis and Odene Walls Zachary. He graduated from Houlka High School in 1942. Zachary served in the U.S. Air Force during WWII. On December 23, 1944 he united in marriage to Hazel M. Henderson. Mr. Zachary joined the Memphis Police Department in 1948, and in 1964 graduated from the FBI Academy. Inspector Zachary retired from the Memphis Police Department in 1973. He and his family moved to his boyhood hometown of Houlka, MS, where he served that community first as Chief of Police and then as Mayor until 1976. He served as Chief of Police in Wynne, AR from 1979-1986, when N.E. and Hazel retired to their lake home in Eudora, MS. In 1998 they moved to Texas to be near their son James and his wife Jeanne and his grandchildren. He was a former member and deacon of Colonial Baptist Church, Memphis, TN and a member and former deacon of Willow Springs Baptist Church, Athens, TX. Zachary was also a 32nd degree Mason. N.E. is survived by his wife of 62 years, Hazel; sons, James Zachary and William "Bill" Zachary; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; brother, Wayne Zachary of Middleton, TN; two sisters, Marie Quarles of Houlka, MS and Mable Murphree of Memphis, TN. Visitation will be from 5-7 Friday, February 16 with the service at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 17, all being held at Memorial Park Funeral Home. Entombment will follow at Memorial Park Mausoleum.
