Lee was born in, what was at the time, Burke County, now McDowell, NC. At the age of nine (almost ten), he moved with his parents to Montford's Cove in Rutherford County. At the first opportunity, Lee volunteered in the service of the Confederacy. He obtained a battlefield commission of 2nd Lt. and served in this capacity in Lee's Army. He was killed in battle in Mechanicsville, VA, June 1862. Family stories say that Lee felt his impending death and passed a letter and his watch to the chaplain of the company to be returned to his mother. Recent discoveries have given credence to this. The chaplain was a local neighbor and friend, Washington Haynes. There remains a location on the Hemphill farm that is known as "the Lee field." Family stories say that Lee had cleared this area in preparation for building a house and getting married. No one remembers who the bride was to be. Lee's body is not present, but a bronze marker resides in the Hemphill Morgan Cemetery in Rutherford County, NC as a memorial.
