Shirley was born October 3, 1937, in Barbourville, KY and was raised there until moving to Ohio in 1954. Wakeman has been her home for the last 22 years.
Shirley was employed at General Motors in Elyria for 19 years as a press operator. She attended Old Fashioned Grace Baptist Church in South Amherst. Her hobbies in life included shopping, and traveling with family. However, her greatest joy was her family and hosting family events and holidays.
Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Crawford Griffith; her daughter, Penny Sue Melgoza (Dino) of Kentucky; her grandchildren, Dominic Melgoza and Lucas Melgoza; her brothers, James Jones of Oberlin, Glenn Jones of N.C., Dwayne Jones of N.C., and Randall Jones of Wakeman; her sisters, Brenda Byrd of Wakeman and Audrey Hardwick of Vermilion.
She was preceded in death by her son, Paul Ray Griffith; her grandchild, Trenton J. Griffith; brothers, Perry Jones, Winston Jones, Jerry Jones, Barry Jones, and Charlie Jones; her sisters, Faye Combs, Judy Jones, and Irene Gholson; as well as her parents, Lathat and Viola Jones (nee: Fredrick).
Public visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday, September 13, from 6-8 p.m.at Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst, Ohio. The funeral will be held the following day, Tuesday, at 11 a.m. at Old Fashioned Grace Baptist Church. Rebroadcasting of services will be available at http://www.hempelfuneralhome.com/. The Rev. Farrell Keith, pastor of Old Fashioned Grace Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery.
