John was an early settler of Brown Twp., moving from Franklin County, Kentucky in 1828 before there was a town of Waveland. He married Mary "Polly" Kephart daughter of George Kephart, Kentucky veteran of the War of 1812. They lived Northwest of present day Freedom Baptist Church on a ridge known as Opossum Ridge. Indian Creek was the Northren boundary of his property.
