Don was born November 12, 1922 in Newton, Massachusetts, son of Clayton H. Alvord and Irene Chapman Alvord.

He served in the U.S. Army as a combat military policeman in Europe until after the end of World War II. His unit, the 69th Military Police Platoon of the 69th Infantry Division, was cited for Meritorious Service during the advance across Germany in the spring of 1945.

He married Beulah "Boo" Anderson Alvord of Shelley, Idaho, in December 1950. They raised two sons, and Beulah died in May 1986.

He received his Bachelor of Science in Geology at the University of Idaho in 1951, and pursued post graduate studies in chemistry at the University of Lowell, Lowell, Massachusetts and at the University of Utah.

Donald was a geochemist and a registered professional geologist, spending his 35 year federal civil service career in research, geological mapping and scientific writing. He authored over 60 reports and papers on chemistry, metallurgy, mining engineering and geology. He worked in Colorado, Washington, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Utah and Washington D.C. He retired as the Associate District Manager for the Vernal District of the Bureau of Land Management, following 32 years as a geologist for the U.S. Geological Survey.

He married Sheila Kathleen Sorenson of Axtell, Utah, in November 1986. Donald and Sheila moved from Bountiful to Kanab, Utah in 1988 and built a retirement home.
