Mrs. Buchanan, 88, a longtime Wykoff resident, died Thursday (Feb. 14, 2008) at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester.
Veronica Mulhern was born May 28, 1919, in Wykoff, was raised in Wykoff, and was a 1937 graduate of Wykoff High School. She then attended Ancker Hospital Training School for Nurses, graduating in 1941 as a registered nurse. She worked as a RN in St. Paul until her marriage to Garland R. Buchanan on Oct. 22, 1945, in St. Paul. The couple moved to Fond du Lac, Wis., in 1945, where Mrs. Buchanan worked as a nurse at St. Agnes Hospital. In 1950, they moved to Winnebago, Minn., where she worked at the local hospital.
They moved to Wykoff in 1955, and she worked for Dr. J.P. Nehring in Preston until 1968. She then became director of nursing at the Ostrander Nursing Home, and later held the same position at the Harmony Hospital. She retired in 1973. A longtime member of St. Kilian Catholic Church in Wykoff, she was active in its women's groups, as well as the American Red Cross. Her greatest loves were her family, her Irish heritage and the Green Bay Packers.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Robert (Pam) of Sioux Falls, S.D.; a daughter, Pat Buchanan of Rochester; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Gary and Richard.
Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Thauwald Funeral Home in Wykoff, and an hour before the service Monday at St. Ignatius Catholic Church. There will be a Rosary at 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
