Mary was the daughter of Sarah A.C. Summerall. Her father is unknown but died about 1845. She had three brothers, Zachariah, born about 1836, Allen, born about 1839, and Henry born about 1842. Her mother married Ansel Walker in Columbia County and had two more children, Mary's half siblings, Uriah Walker and Poleta Walker. While her brothers lived with Ansel and Sarah, Mary lived with another relative, Nancy Cook. After the mother, Sarah, died about 1855, Zack and Henry lived with Mary and her husband for a time. Allen died of disease during the Civil War in 1863 at Lake City, most likely Zack also died during the War. It is unknown precisely what became of Henry , though he probably lived on in Manatee County.
