Philadelphia Daily News (PA) - December 23, 1992Deceased Name: 'MIGHTY MITE' JOHN MCMENAMIN

John J. McMenamin, a member of the legendary "Mighty Mites" basketball teams of Roman Catholic High School and St. Joseph's University of the 1930s, died Monday. He was 77 and lived in Manayunk.

At 5 feet 8 and 150 pounds, McMenamin was called the "Watch Charm Guard" on an undersized team that baffled the students of the game by consistently beating teams with much bigger players. The Mighty Mites had only one 6- footer.

At Roman, the Mites won Catholic League titles in 1933 and 1934.

McMenamin, who coached at St. Joseph's in the 1950s, retired in 1972 as a supervisor for the Fairmount Park Commission's Recreation Department. For the next 15 years he worked part-time in the mail room of the Center City law firm of Obermayer, Redmann, Maxwell and Hippel.

"He was really a man's man," said his brother, Francis. "Among the three of us, John, Leo (deceased) and myself, there was never a harsh word, never a debate."

McMenamin followed sports all his life, particularly Roman's. The last game he attended was June 3, when Roman beat Bishop Kenrick for the Catholic League baseball title. He was a 1934 graduate of Roman and a 1938 graduate of St. Joseph's.

He was a member of the Sports Hall of Fame of both Roman and St. Joseph's. He also was inducted into the Philadelphia Oldtimers Sports Hall of Fame.

He was an Army veteran of World War II.

His wife, the former Mary A. Hines, died in 1983. Besides his brother there were no other immediate survivors.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church, 24th and Green streets.

Friends may call between 7 and 9 p.m. Sunday at the Joseph A. Quinn Funeral Home, Roosevelt Boulevard and Sanger Street.

Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Cheltenham Avenue above Easton Road, Cheltenha
