Cynthia Ione was born on July 13, 1939 in Sherman County, Texas to William Glenn and Mildred Ione Reed. Cynthia graduated from Stratford High School with the class of 1957 where she was one of eight girls in a class of 25. She attended Texas Tech University from 1957 to 1959 where she met Samuel Roy Schoenhals of Follett, Texas. In January 1960 she and Sam were married in Stratford and moved to California. Cynthia and Sam divorced in 1978. In 1970 Cynthia began a 22-year career with the Department of Defense. She worked in financial management for the Naval Weapons Center until 1985. She then moved to San Diego and worked at the Space and Naval Warfare Systems center.
In 1992 Cynthia was diagnosed with lung cancer. She demonstrated her strong will to survive and fought the cancer into remission to the amazement of her doctors. In 1993 she retired from the Department of Defense and returned home to Stratford to be close to her family.
