When Elenor and Williams daughter Clementine died at 17 years old in April of 1884 of the measles. Several months later, in October of that year, her mother (Elenor) committed suicide in a hospital in Topeka, Kansas.*

* From the notes of Virginia Calhoun Senior, the niece and namesake of James Lowrey's second wife, Virginia Swan Calhoun. Virginia Senior lived with her Aunt Virginia and Uncle James in Stafford, Kansas during a couple of her high school years.
