She met Marvin during the recording session for "Let's Get It On." Marvin's hit single, "Got To Give It Up," from 1977, featured Jan on background vocals. She acted as his costume designer, putting together the iconic outfit he wore for the famed Oakland concert—silver red-laced platform boots, a beaded denim shirt, and a red watch cap. They were married in 1977 and divorced in 1981. She also managed the career of her daughter, Nona Gaye, a singer and actress with credits including "Ali," "Crash," and two "Matrix" films. Her memoir, "After the Dance: My Life With Marvin Gaye," was published in 2015.
