Jesse Perkins, one of the well known citizens of this community died last Friday night as a result of a few days illness with pneumonia. He had been in very poor health for a year past, and the attack of pneumonia did its work quickly owing to his enfeebled condition. He was widely known over this section of the state having traveled for many years selling various articles of merchandise, mostly hardware, machinery and farming implements and serving both as retail and wholesale salesman. His reputation as a man who could sell almost anything was a source of much pride to him. He had an unlimited amount of stories in stock and these with his jolly nature stood him well in hand in many a trade.
Mr. Perkins was born in Rush county June 16, 1835, and came with his parents to Boone county when very young. He had resided in Lebanon for over fifty years. He had three brothers all of whom served in the war of the rebellion; John, of this city, James of Alexis, Illinois, and William who died in camp at Indianapolis. He was married May 27, 1858 to Elizabeth Jane Lister, who with the following children survives him: Miss Lida Perkins, of this city, O.P. Perkins, of Ashville, North Carolina; Mrs. Frank Richman, of Indianapolis; Mrs. John A. Bonham and Mrs. Harry O. Thomas, of Hartford City. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. Lysander Darnall, of this city. He had been a member of the Methodist church for thirty years. The funeral was held at his late residence on North Lebanon street Monday at 10 a.m., Rev. Tillotson officiating. Burial at Oak Hill Cemetery.
