Bertha Larsdatter (Prestegard) Folkestad was born on 30 Nov 1830 at Askvoll, Sogn og Fjordane fylke, Norway, daughter of Lars Larson Gerdskvål and Barbara Olsdatter Yngre. She was the mother of seven children, only three of whom survive. She and her husband and their three surviving children arrived at Boston, Massachusetts on 28 May 1883 aboard the S.S. Samaria which arrived from Liverpool, England. The first year they lived in Primrose Township, Dane County, Wisconsin probably with her brother, Lars Larson England. In 1885 Hans Folkestad purchased 45 acres in Section 14 of Perry Township. Hans died at their home on 16 Mar 1910. In 1913 her son, Bernt (Ben) Folkestad moved to King Township, Winnebago County, Iowa. Ben's mother moved with Ben and his family. Bertha died at Ben's home in King Township, Winnebago County, Iowa. She was buried at West Primrose Lutheran Cemetery. She was survived by her daughter, Caroline (Mrs. Ole Anderson) of Primrose Township; Thomas Folkestad of Perry Township and Bernt Folkestad of King Township, Winnebago County, Iowa and 10 grandchildren.
