Crawford Staples was the son of Miles and Sarah Trundy (Trefethen) Staples. He was the first white child born in Stockton. Dr. William Crawford was the attending physician at Fort Pownal and the child was named for him.

Three of the earliest shipbuilders in Stockton were William Griffin, Crawford Staples and John Clifford.

Crawford Staples built six schooners at the Hichborn Yard between the years 1802 and 1819. These schooners were the "Seven Friends", "John", "Dispatch", "Traveller", "Enterprise" and "Freedom".

Crawford Staples and John Griffin were owners of large tracts of property in Stockton.

Crawford married Ruth Ridley, the daughter of James and Isabel (Bowie) Ridley, in 1793 in Prospect Maine and they had ten children together.

Mr. Staples was born in Prospect Maine and died in Prospect Maine, having lived there his entire life.
