Rebecca Forman Ely was a daughter of Richard Isaac Ely and Amy Forman. She married James Baird January 7, 1834 in Monmouth county (sic), New Jersey. They moved to Jersey county (sic), Illinois about 1853, and James died there October 22, 1855.


Rebecca and James had eight children:

Mary Elizabeth (1836)

John (1839)

Amy Ann who is also on record as Mary Ann, Mary and Emma (1841)

Rei (1843)

Richard Ely (1846)

Evaline Foreman (1848)

Rebecca Ely (1850)

Thomas James (1853)


After almost ten years of widowhood, April 26, 1866, Rebecca married Charles Muir Campbell in Springfield, Illinois.


Rebecca died suddenly of heart failure April 10, 1892, at 7:30 p.m. in the residence of her son R.E. Baird, at 1011 S. 4th Street in Springfield, Illinois. According to her obituary, She was suddenly taken ill while walking through the house. A physician was sent for but he did not arrive in time to be of any assistance.


Rebecca was survived by three sons: Rel Baird of Aspen, Colorado; T.J. Baird of Lakota, North Dakota; R.E. Baird of Springfield, Illinois; and four daughters: Mary E. Christopher of Beatrice, Nebraska; Emma Cruiser of St. Louis, Missouri; Eva Post of Virden, Illinois; and Mrs. Frank Cook of Springfield.
