Information I'm relaying came from us finding an old brown worn newspaper article in my husband's grandmother's pictures. It related to her brother John Godi. We had not known any of the details of John Godi's death, so we asked my husband's aunt what had actually happened since the newspaper article implied that John Godi had committed suicide. This is the true story of his death as told to us by my husband's aunt on the Brown side.

After reading a newspaper clipping about John Godi's death we had many questions. The Fort Worth newspaper stated he killed himself by drinking rat poison. As shocking as this may sound we had some doubts about it. Newspaper's back then did not try and soft coat the details of someone's death or did not refrain from making assumptions. We asked a family member, John Godi's nieces, since we had not heard this story from my mother-in-law, and we were told a very different story. We were told that John, or Uncle Johnny as she referred to him was actually poisoned by someone in a Fort Worth bar.

John was indeed separated from his wife and despondent over it as the newspaper said, but not to the point of suicide. It seems he had visited a local bar and at sometime during the night someone slipped rat poison in this beer.

John was the brother of my husband's grandmother and my husband's aunt said for weeks her mother been having strong premonitions that something terrible was going to happen. John Godi checked into a hotel or was actually living in a downtown Fort Worth hotel at the time and became very ill. He called down for help to the desk clerk who sent someone up to assist him at his room.

The doorman said he rubbed his legs as John cried out in pain. He was then taken to a Fort Worth hospital where he later died. His sister was called and was there with him when he died. And my mother-in-law and her father went to Denton, at least 35 miles from Fort Worth to bring her Uncle Johnny's parents to the hospital to see their son. Unfortunatly they were stopped for speeding and the delay caused the parents to be too late to see their son before he died.

My husband's aunt told us she would always remember her mother running through the hospital, screaming her brother's name. At his bedside he told her over and over he did not drank the poison, that someone had put it in his drink at the bar. Family members truly believe he was poisoned. And we have no other account from the newspapers if they ever solved the mystery. We may some day get a chance to look up the story at the public library and see.

As sad as this story is John Godi had two young son's at the time of his death. One of went to live with their mother and the other one went to live with the Godi grandparents. Five years later, while visiting with relatives he was killed in another tragic family accident. Some families seem to be doomed for heartache and my husband's family had their share of it.

We have this listing of Johnny Godi only because of the fact I hate to see strangers have listings that are not their family. And I share this story not for the anything more than the fact he died such a sad and unfortunate death as many people do. I only want to honor him and tell his story.

I would happily transfer this listing to Johnny's son who we know is still living, if he ever does want to get in touch with us. My husband's aunt's said they would love to meet him some day.
