Biographical Notes:
Sam was the son of Anna Mariah (Dinsmore) Evans, native of Kentucky, and Samuel Henderson Evans. There was a Samuel H Evans who married Anna M Dinsmore in Sangamon County, Illinois on September 7, 1854. It is thought that this Sam was her son, but the date of his birth is not known for sure. Anna was listed as a widow in 1880, but in 1870 in New Berlin, Sangmon County, Illinois, she had no husband listed and had 4 children with her:
Mary J Evans 14
James D Evans 13
Samuel H Evans 10
Charlotte M Evans 8
By 1880, Anna was listed as a resident of Fort Scott, Kansas, and her parents, Adam and Matilda Dinsmore were with her as well as her children James, Samuel H, and Charlotte Evans.

Sam's brother James David Evans died in 1913 in Cherokee County, Kansas. Charlotte "Lottie" Green died in 1939 in Galena, Kansas. She married Francis H. Green, and was living at the time of his death in Galena, Kansas, in 1926.

Samuel H Evans of Monmouth, Crawford County, Kansas, married Ida Pierson [written as Peirson in the marriage license] on September 18, 1889, in Girard, Kansas. Ida had 3 children by Samuel according to her obituary. She is buried in Girard Cemetery and died in 1957. The three children were Clover Harry Evans, Della Mae Evans [Earthman], and Nora Etta Evans.

In December 1904, Ida M Evans sued for divorce from Samuel H. Evans; the divorce was finalized in January 1905, and included the custody of their two minor children. Samuel was not listed as a member of their household in 1900, although Ida was noted as married.

S. H. Evans married Rozella Young on January 18, 1911. Rozella had divorced her former husband, Christian, in 1908.
