Carl A. Swanson Jr., 85, of Buckingham, Pa., formerly of DeKalb, III., died peacefully Saturday, April 26, 2003, in his home surrounded by his loving family.

Carl graduated from Northwestern University and ROTC with a commission in the Navy. He served three years aboard the USS Louisville in the Pacific before returning to the Naval Academy for postgraduate work in communications and then to Northwestern for a juris doctor degree. He was admitted to the Illinois State Bar in 1948.

Carl practiced law in DeKalb and later served as city attorney and state's attorney, and was elected circuit judge of Illinois' 16th Judicial Circuit, from which he retired in 1983 after 20 years on the bench.

Beyond the professional accomplishments, Carl's humanity, wisdom, warmth and integrity earned him the respect of many who had the opportunity to know him. He was a precious gift to all and will be truly missed.

A memorial service will be held at 1 1 a.m. Saturday, June 7. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 900 Normal Road in DeKalb. Memorial contributions in Carl's name may be made to Doylestown Hospital Hospice, 595 W. State St., Doylestown, PA 1 8901 , or to the DeKalb Public Library, 309 Oak St., DeKalb, IL 60115.
