Sonnie Opal Hammond, 81, died Aug. 14 at Our Lady of Compassion Care Center. A funeral was held at the First Baptist Church of Rotan, Texas, with Richard Miller officiating. Burial was in the Belvieu Cemetery in Rotan. No local service is planned at this time.

Mrs. Hammond was born March 26, 1910, in Erath County, Texas. She lived in Alaska for the past year and worked as a church caretaker.

She is survived by her sons, Odell of Mesquite, Texas, and Edward of Bakersfield, Calif.; her daughters, Opal of Anchorage, Wanda Ludlow of Sitka, and Ruby Buttery of Punxsutawney, Penn.; 14 grandchildren; and eight great- grandchildren. Local arrangements were by Kehl's Forest Lawn Mortuary and Crematory.
