February 27, 1942 — August 16, 2021
Diane Suhrstedt Patterson Murray, of Charleston, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest Monday, August 16, 2021. Her Funeral Service will be held Thursday, August 19, 2021 in St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, 405 King Street at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends Wednesday, August 18th, at J. Henry Stuhr Inc. Downtown Chapel, 232 Calhoun Street from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m.

Diane was born February 27, 1942 in Charleston, South Carolina, daughter of the late Raymond Jasper Patterson and Carolyn Suhrstedt Patterson. She was a graduate of St. Andrew's High School and Newberry College, receiving her Master's at Converse College. While attending Newberry (1960-1964) she was May Queen, Miss Newberrian, Homecoming Queen, a cheerleader, named to Who's Who in America, and sang with The Newberry Singers. She thoroughly enjoyed class reunions.

Diane, lovingly known as 'DeeDee', was a devoted mother and grandmother. She doted on her grandchildren, nieces, and nephews at all times, and encouraged them to be the best that they could be. Family gatherings were extremely important to her.

While living in Spartanburg, she was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church, where she made lifelong friends. She also devoted her time to many charitable organizations. After returning to Charleston she taught at many elementary schools, including Sanders-Clyde, Mount Zion, finishing her career at St. James-Santee. She rejoined St. Matthew's Lutheran Church. She was involved in WELCA Circle 8, Altar Guild, and was always willing to give assistance wherever needed.

Diane was grateful for all the kind care and expertise delivered by her medical team and her caregivers.

Diane is survived by her daughter, Courtney Smith Prickett of Mount Pleasant, SC; son, Stephen Charles Smith of Ocean Isle Beach, NC; five grandchildren: John Philip Prickett, Mary McIver Prickett, Carolyn Elizabeth Prickett, Marland Anna Smith and Sarah Suhrstedt Smith; sister, Sheila P. Niemeyer (Tony) of Sunset, SC; and brothers: Raymond J. Patterson, Jr. (Darcy) and Russell J. Patterson (Anne) both of Charleston, SC.
