John L. Blount
May 22, 1937 - November 3, 2022
John L Blount, 85, of Mt. Prospect, Illinois, passed from this life on November 3, 2022. John was born in Henry County, Tennessee, in 1937, to John Leniol and Ruby Marie (Wimberley) Blount. John was a devoted husband of 56 years to the former Edith Davis, a loving father to Laura Odum (Patrick), and a proud grandfather to Joshua Odum. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He will be missed by his loving family, who wait in resurrection hope for their reunion.
After graduating from Buchanan High School, John attended the University of Tennessee at Martin and served his country in the National Guard. He moved from Paris, Tennessee, to Chicago in 1955. A few years later, he met Edith at church. He worked as an electrician at Oscar Mayer for more than thirty years,and enjoyed telling stories and reminiscing about his co-workers and interesting events from his days there. For many years after his retirement, he had breakfast regularly with other former Oscar Mayer employees.
John was active in his church, Cardinal Drive Church of Christ, for as long as his health allowed. Before that, he helped start the Des Plaines Church of Christ, on Illinois Street. John was well-known and loved for helping around the church building and, especially, serving older members of the church by taking them shopping and assisting them with other needs. He and Edith also temporarily housed children from Shults-Lewis Child and Family Services in Valparaiso, Indiana.
In his retirement, John enjoyed working around the house, reading, gardening, watching stock car racing, Bulls basketball, and Cubs baseball, and spending time with his family and friends. He also enjoyed staying in touch with friends and extended family from Tennessee.
John's kindness, good sense of humor, and faith were appreciated by everyone who met him.
Visitation Tuesday November 8, 10:00 a.m. until time of Funeral Service 11:00 a.m. at Friedrichs Funeral Home, 320 W. Central Rd., (at Northwest Highway) Mt. Prospect, IL 60056. Interment Acacia Park Cemetery.
