Janet was the youngest of four children growing up in Cedar City. After graduating from high school, she attended Brigham Young University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree. She later moved to Las Vegas, Nevada where she taught elementary school for the Clark County School District. She later met and married Michael Charles McDermott (dec.) on August 21, 1965. They later divorced in 1979.
Janet had a firm testimony of Jesus Christ and in His gospel that gave her a spiritual foundation throughout her life. Many of her church callings were in the Primary as a teacher, chorister and pianist enhancing her love of little children.
Janet loved learning and teaching. She retired from the Clark County School District after teaching for more than 15 years. Her lifelong loves include her family, visiting with friends, playing the piano, her cat Shadow, reading good books and playing daily puzzles.
Janet was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Phil Hirschi and Clark Hirschi, and son, Michael Joseph McDermott. She is survived by her sister Mary Heyborne, sons; Gregory McDermott (Michelle); Charles McDermott (Linda); Daniel McDermott (Brandi) and grandchildren: Brett McDermott; Justin McDermott (Monika); Austin McDermott (Kristi); Nicholas McDermott; Samantha Vandertoolen (Coby); Autumn Kidd; Carley McDermott; and Hayden McDermott.
A viewing will be held Friday, November 19th at 10:00 am at Southern Utah Mortuary located at 190 North 300 West Cedar City, Utah and a graveside service will be held immediately after at the Cedar City Cemetery.
