Cornelia Bradford Pittman was born in Tarboro, Edgecombe Co, NC, the second of two daughters born to Dr. Newsom Jones "N. J." Pittman and his (2nd) wife, Mary "Eliza" Battle, widow of William Francis Dancy. She is the paternal grandchild of John & Catherine Pittman of Halifax County, and a direct descendant of Thomas Pittman Jr. (1634-1691) who came to Surry Co, VA from England. On her mother's side she is the grandchild of wealthy Judge James Smith Battle & his (2nd) wife, Sarah "Sally" Westray of "Cool Spring" Plantation in Edgecombe.

Her father was married (1st) to Mary Ann Streeter in 1858, by whom two children were born (Kate & Minerva). The first Mrs. Pittman died in 1861, and Dr. Pittman married for the second time to Mary Eliza Battle Dancy, by whom two more daughters were born, including Cornelia.

Cornelia grew up in the expansive home her father built on Main Street in Tarboro (now destroyed), surrounded by her sister, Eliza (who died at age 21) stepsister Minerva (from her father's first marriage) and stepbrother, Frank Battle Dancy (from her mother's first marriage).

At age 21, she married 29-year old John W. B. Battle, son of Lawrence Battle and Mary Blount Taylor of Gold Rock, Nash County. John was a wealthy merchant-farmer in Tarboro, and the couple would have three known children: Dr. Newsom Jones Pittman Battle (b. 1896), James Smith Battle (b. 1898), and Cornelia Pittman Battle (b. 1902).

After her parents death (ca. 1910), Cornelia and her family moved into her parent's big house on the corner Main Street and St. James Streets, where her unmarried stepsister, Minerva, also lived.

Just five years later in 1915, her husband of 20 years passed at the age of 49. The widow continued to live in her father's home, raising her three children, until the house was destroyed sometime after 1920, and the family moved to smaller housing on Baker Street.

Cornelia would remain a widow 39 years after her husband's passing, and died in 1954 at age 80.

Her son, Newsom Pittman Battle, would following in his grandfather's footsteps and become a doctor. Her daughter, Cornelia Pittman Battle, never married and died in Tarboro in 1977.
