Family lore says that John went to Nebraska with three of his grown sons who staked out homesteads near Geneva, Nebraska. He later went back to Indiana to bring his wife, Rachel, and their daughters to Nebraska. While he was in Indiana, he died and is buried there. His wife, Rachel Ryker Yates, later lived at the homestead home of her son Edward T. Yates near Geneva, Nebraska.
