RUFFIN - Ashley Dawn Kennon, 11 years, of 4528 Old US 29 in Pelham died Monday, July 10, 1995, at N.C. Baptist Hospital.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church cemetery.

A native of Reidsville, she attended North Elementary School in Pelham and was a member of True Gospel Baptist Church.

Survivors include her mother, Linda Gauldin Kennon of Pelham; father, Russell Kennon of Ruffin; sisters, Brenda Cangemi of Greensboro and Pamela Martin of Reidsville; brother, Mark Kennon of Reidsville and maternal grandmother, Minnie Blanks of Danville, Va.

A Ruffin man will spend more than 14 years in prison after being sentenced Thursday for a crime a judge compared to a terrorist attack.

A Rockingham County jury found Pablo de la Cruz Contreras guilty of second-degree murder in the death of Ashley Dawn Kennon, 11. The 29-year-old migrant worker also was convicted of hit and run, personal injury, for running over Ashley's friend, Jennifer Cannon, 11. The two girls were riding their bicycles July 8 near their Ruffin homes.
