Robert moved with his parents to Elizabeth, MN and came to Grand Forks in 1917. He was a veteran of World War I. He married Pearl Lowell on Sept. 17, 1917 in Grand Forks. He was employed as a salesman for Lystad-Redick until his retirement in 1960. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Robert & Pearl were the parents of Douglas & Beverly (Gary) Balow.

Robert's siblings include Herbert.

Fergus Falls Daily Journal 1917 - "A WAR BRIDE - Former Elizabeth Boy Married at Grand Fords Before Leaving for Camp - Elizabeth. Oct. 2 - Robert Ray Burau who for some time has been connected with the H.K. Geist Co. of Grand Forks, N.D. and who was recently ordered to report for military duty under the selective draft ruling, claimed a war bride Sept. 17 when he was united in marriage to Miss Pearl Lowell of that city. The cememony was performed by County Judge L.K. Haswell. The groom departed last Saturday for Camp Dodge, Des Moines, as one of the 88 soldiers drafted from that county for the first quota."
