George Delos Carter, 96, died Saturday, Feb. 6, 1999, in Red Wing, Minn., where he had lived the past two years. He was born Jan. 25, 1903, to Elmer and Hulda Ann (Walker) Carter in Montour, Iowa.

His elementary education was in Marshalltown, Iowa, and he went to high school in Craik, Saskatchewan, Canada. He married Margaret Weien on Nov. 8, 1930, at First Lutheran Church, Bemidji. His wife died July 31, 1995. They lived in Bemidji until 1981, when they moved to Hibbing.

He farmed and worked for the Minnesota Department of Highways and in retail sales with Bemidji Mercantile.

A member of First Lutheran Church in Bemidji, he helped dig the basement of the church using horses. He was a member of Bemidji Garden Club. He was involved with his family and remained alert, reading newspapers and books.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, William; and sisters Beatrice, Vivian and Francis.

George is survived by his daughter, Genevieve (Reuben) Lervik; son, George W. (Margaret) Carter; three grandchildren; and four great-grandsons.
