He was born March 28, 1952 in St. Joseph County, Indiana a son of James G. and Edna C. (Miller) Smith. As a young boy, his family moved to Union Township, Whitley County. He was educated at Coesse School and graduated from Columbia City Joint High School in 1970.
From 1970 until 1979 he was employed at Scott's Grocery, delivered the Journal Gazette for six years, worked at Group Dekko for 17 years and Wal Mart from 2004 until becoming disabled.
His memberships included Columbia City Church of the Nazarene and Eagles Lodge #1906.
Surviving relatives include his mother, Edna Sampson of Columbia City; two half brothers and a half sister, Jerry Sampson of Columbia City, Rick (Pam) Sampson of Columbia City and Linda (Paul) Barkman of St. Joe.
He was preceded in death by a half brother, Larry Sampson.
