Sharon L. Gray-VanDusseldorp, Former Job Trainer
Friends of Sharon L. Gray-VanDusseldorp always talk about her energy, as if they are in awe that so much energy could be packed into a single person. "She was one of the most incredible people, five feet tall, beautiful, who loved everyone," said Carolyn Larkin of Minneapolis, a human resources consultant who knew Mrs. Gray-VanDusseldorp both professionally and personally for more than a decade.
Mrs. Gray-VanDusseldorp was the founder of Gray Consulting in Atlanta, which she relocated to Hollywood in February. She gave motivational seminars and customer service training to employees, and was active in welfare-to-work programs, especially for women. "She was an inspiration to everyone who heard her speak, and she changed the lives of many, many people," Larkin said.
Gray Consulting held the largest customer service contract in the United States at Hartsfield International Airport in Atlanta, where Mrs. Gray-VanDusseldorp helped airport employees prepare for the 1996 Olympics.
She drowned on Wednesday in a single-car accident in Gulfport, Mississippi. She was 53. She was killed when she lost control of the 1998 Pontiac Grand Am rental car she was driving after leaving the airport in Gulfport. The car left the road, grazed a telephone pole, and flipped upside down into a drainage ditch filled with seven feet of water, according to her husband, Larry VanDusseldorp.
The couple had been married only 10 months.
Mrs. Gray-VanDusseldorp, a Baptist, was born in Montgomery, Alabama to Henry and Clare Jones Lipes. Following the premature death of her father, she moved as a child with her mother and brother, Richard, to East Point, Georgia.
In addition to her mother, brother and husband, Mrs. Gray-VanDusseldorp is also survived by her daughter, Karen Gray Denson; son, John Michael Gray, Jr.; and grandson, Cody Denson.
A memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, at the First Baptist Church in Fort Lauderdale, FL and another at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, at the McDonough Road Baptist Church, Fayetteville, GA. Contributions may be made to the Sharon Gray-VanDusseldorp Trust Fund, c/o Carolyn Larkin, 100 Birch Bluff Road, Tonka Bay, Minnesota 55331.
