Married Sarah Knowles in Matlack, England on June 6, 1830. Came to U. S. in March 1832. One of the oldest engineers in America. Worked in Pennsylvania machine shops of the Pennsylvania Central. Engineer on locomotive from Jacksonville to Springfield in Feb. 1842 which was the first railroad engine to enter Springfield. One of Sangamon County's oldest settlers and also a blacksmith. Amassed considerable land and live stock.
Survived by wife and five children: Isaac J. Gregory, George Gregory, Jacob Gregory, Mrs. Ben Wallace, Mrs. George Matthews.
