Edgar Nicholas "Nick" Cleves, Jr., 95, passed away peacefully on September 28, 2022 at Highlandspring in Ft Thomas KY. He was born in Covington, KY to Edgar Nicholas Sr. and Regina Eibes Cleves on August 9, 1927. He was preceded in death by his wife Gertrude (nee Lahrman), his parents, daughter Rose Ann, great-granddaughter Olivia, and his siblings Father Simeon, OFM, Sister Mary Virginia Ann, SND, Joseph, Sr., William, Sister Mary Jeanne Frances, SND, and John Cleves. Nick is survived by his children, Monsignor William Cleves, Charles (Mary Lynn) Cleves, Marilyn (James) Souders, Rosemary (the late Douglas) Linz, Emily (Lyle) Whaley, Frances (Steven) Galbavy, Thomas (Jana) Cleves, Joan (Timothy) Keutzer, Ann (Ajay) Jain and his brother Charles Cleves, 19 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren. In 1943, Nick graduated from Covington Latin School. In 1945, he graduated from Villa Madonna College and joined the Navy. Nick married Gert on November 27, 1952. Residing in Bellevue for most of his life, he was very active with Sacred Heart Church and School and was President of the Holy Name Society and a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Catholic Order of Foresters, and St. Anthony's Holy Name Society. He also was very active in Lions Club International and spent 50 years collecting and repairing eyeglasses. He received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award, Lionism's highest award, twice. After 45 years, Nick retired from Cleves and Lonnemann Jewelers in 1989. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m., Wednesday, October 5, 2022 at Dobbling, Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home (241 Fairfield Ave.), Bellevue KY. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, October 6, 2022 at St. Joseph Church (4011 Alexandria Pike), Cold Spring KY with Interment to follow at St. Stephen Cemetery in Ft. Thomas, KY. Memorials are suggested to Holy Spirit Outreach (859-261-0818), 840 Washington Ave., Newport, KY 41071. Online condolences can be given at dmefuneral.com. Nick joined the Navy after graduation in August 1945. After training, his first assignment was to travel to Hawaii and evacuate wounded sailors and their families to California. Nick traveled around the world. He was a gunnery officer and eventually rose to the rank of Commander. He retired from the Navy in August 1987 and was credited with 42 years of Active and Reserve Duty.
