Fridolin A. "Fritz" Boeding, 88, Manhattan, KS passed away Saturday, February 2, 2008 in the Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan.

He was born July 7, 1919 at Seneca, KS, the son of August Boeding and Paula Krapp Boeding. He grew up in Seneca where he attended the local schools and was a 1937 graduate of the Sts. Peter & Paul High School.

In 1941, Mr. Boeding was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving state-side and in Europe. He received the Bronze Star on October 29, 1944 for meritorious service. He also earned the following medals during WW II: American Campaign, Europe, Africa, Middle-East Campaign with four battle stars, WW II Victory and Army of the Occupation.

Following his honorable discharge in 1946, he remained in the Army Reserve and then returned to active duty in 1949 as a reserve officer on active duty. During his over 30 year career, he served with distinction receiving many letters of commendation and medals. His most notable duty was as Procession Control Officer for the state funeral of President John F. Kennedy, for which he received the Army Commendation Medal.

Mr. Boeding's other awards included the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, American Defense Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal and the Legion of Merit, the highest non-combat medal awarded. As an officer in the U.S. Army, he lived in many locations throughout the United States and in some foreign countries before being assigned to Ft. Riley in 1970. He retired at the rank of Colonel in 1972.

He was united in marriage to Virginia E. Nix on February 12, 1946 at Chickasha, OK. She preceded him in death on April 11, 2003.

He was a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church, 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 1832, 4th Degree member of the Msgr. Lucky Assembly, Lee Pierson V.F. W. Post No. 1786, Pearce-Keller American Legion Post No. 17 and the Stagg Hill Golf Club, all of Manhattan. He was an avid golfer and would often shoot his age.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Boeding was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Norbert, Paul, Marcellus, Edgar, Robert and Victor Boeding; and a sister, Sister Damian.

Survivors include a son, Stephen C. Boeding, and his wife, Cynthia K., Kansas City, MO; a daughter, Jennean A. Boeding, Kansas City, MO; two brothers, Mark Boeding, Indianapolis, IN and John Boeding, Angels Camp, CA; a sister, Mary Helen Becker, Bloomington, IL; and a granddaughter, Jennifer E. Boeding, Manhattan.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11am, Thursday, February 7, 2008, in the Seven Dolors Catholic Church with Father Joseph Popelka as celebrant. Burial, with full military honors, will be at 3pm in the Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery, Seneca.

A Rosary will be recited at 7:30pm Wednesday, February 6, 2008, in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan. Memorial contributions can be made to the Seven Dolors Catholic Church or the St. Judes Children's Research Hospital and left in care of the funeral home.
