1754 - born near Londonderry, North Ireland. Some sources show birth date as 1745 but age shown on Pension Claim states he was 66 in 1820

1774 (Age: 20) - Sailed to USA on "Cape Horn" out of Southampton England. He sailed to the Port of Baltimore. He was sold to the highest bidder to make good his passage. He worked on a plantation in Maryland. He formed a close friendship with John Faulkner.

1777 (Age: 23) - When the American Revolution began he sought and received a transfer from his indentured status to the Army of the Revolution. He traveled to Nottingham Township, York County, Pennsylvania, enlisted as a Private and joined Captain James Grier's Company in Col. James Chamber's Second Pennsylvania Regiment (22 Mar).

1777-1778 - Was at Valley Forge during the winter

1781 (Age: 27) - Honorably Discharged from the Army, at Trenton, New Jersey.

1782 (Age: 28) - Married to Ann Robb

1818 (Age: 64) - Pension claim filed in Perry County, OH (Claim No. S. 40369) This claim was based on the military services of James Rusk during the War of the Revolution.

1839 (Age: 85) James died in Clayton Township, Perry Co., OH. James and Ann are in the small unity Presbyterian Cemetery.
