On April 2, 1957, around noon time, 20-month-old Arthur Walter Bauder, wandered from his home on Water Street in Nelliston, followed a path at the end of Prospect Street and down to the four railed railroad below. Engineer Hugh McDonald of Syracuse was traveling at a rate of 45 miles per hour when he noticed an object sitting on the ties. It was Arthur. The Engineer later told investigators when he realized it was a child, he frantically braked, but heard the impact and came to a stop a considerable distance east below the Fort Plain (Nelliston Station). He was operating a 65 car length train with three diesels that fateful day. His shocked parents (Jennie and John Bauder) were unable to explain how their young son left their yard on Water Street and made his way down to the train tracks.
