Fred A. Smith, 81

Fred A. Smith, 81, of 816 Chicago St., died Tuesday afternoon at Highland Hospital, following a short illness.
Mr. Smith, who came to Belvidere from Capron three years ago, was a self-employed heavy equipment operator for Christensen-Smith Trucking Co., Capron, which he formed and operated for some 50 years, retiring in 1970. He was a past Capron Village trustee, past school board member of the former Capron School District 31, past board member of Capron State Bank, charter member of the Boone County Fire District 1, where he currently was an honorary member, a member of the Capron Lions Club, and a life-member of Grand Lodge of the I.O.O.F. He was a member of the Capron United Methodist Church, where he had served on the church board. He was born in Blaine, Boone County, on Sept. 30, 1902, son of Ellis D. and Eudora Yeoman Smith. He was married on Aug. 6, 1924 in Belvidere, to Sadie Easton, who survives.
Survivors besides his wife include one daughter, Mrs. Fay (Shirley) Robinson, of Capron; one granddaughter, Mrs. Gary (Susan) Reininger; and two great-grandsons, Jeff and Brian Reininger, all of Capron.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Ila Meckley.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Capron United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Martha Schimdt officiating. Burial will be in Capron Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Buck-Wheeler-Hyland Funeral Home. Memorials have been established for the church.
