Born in Germany, emigrated to the USA aboard the S.S. Suevia on August 11, 1890. He married Margaret Wilson (daughter of James Wilson and Josephine Plow on July 1, 1913 in Detroit. They had one premature son who died the day he was born (he is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery-Detroit, MI). Berthold's siblings: Hedwig (aka Hattie) (William Hackenberger), Ida A., Herman A. (Anna Pacek), Paul, Emil Bruno (Lillian Landrie), Emma C. (William Maloney). The Kolbe Family ran a bakery in the Detroit area and Berthold also worked for Awrey Bakery. Berthold's parents were William Kolbe and Pauline Welzel.
