A U.S. Army veteran, he served for 7 years in the Intelligence Office, stationed in the US, Europe, and Korea during the Korean Conflict. He went on to earn his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Penn State University. Mr. Sprankle was a teacher at the former J. Frank Faust Junior High School, where he served 33 years, retiring in 1993. Dick was an active member of Park Avenue United Methodist Church, the America Philatelic Society, Franklin County Chapter of PASR, and the Cumberland Valley Philatelic Society Board. He enjoyed stamp collecting, watching sports, especially Penn State, completing puzzles, bowling and golf. He was active in many community services including Meals on Wheels, senior tax preparation, Adopt-a-Highway, and assisted at many Chambersburg Area High School sporting events.
Surviving is his wife of 69 years, Marian (Coffman) Sprankle; two daughters, Deanna Klimek (Mark) of Archer Lodge, NC and Karen Bierbower (Allen) of Chambersburg, PA; and five grandchildren, Sarah and Steven Bierbower and Rebecca, Nathan (Samantha), and Karissa Klimek. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven siblings: Mary, Harold, Kenneth, Betty, Robert, Albert, and Herbert Sprankle.
The funeral service will be held on Monday, September 26, 2022, at 1:00 PM at Park Avenue UMC, 125 Park Ave., Chambersburg, PA 17201, with Reverend Bruce Levy officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:30 AM until service time at 1 PM in the Parlor at the above church. Interment will be in Haven Rest Memorial Park, Shirleysburg, PA. Arrangements are entrusted to the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Chambersburg, PA.
